Grigory Ivanovich Kotovsky (June 12(24), 1881 – August 6, 1925), Soviet military leader and political activist, Civil War veteran, member of the Union, Ukrainian and Moldavian Central Executive Committees, member of the USSR Revolutionary War Council. In December 1920 Kotovsky was appointed commander of the 17 th cavalry division of the Chervonny (Red) Cossacks. In 1921 he was commander of cavalry units and, among other things, suppressed Makhno’s, Antonov’s and Petlyura’s insurrectionists. In September 1921 Kotovsky was appointed commander of the 9 th cavalry division and in October 1922 commander of the 2 nd cavalry corps. In the summer of 1925 People’s Commissar Frunze appointed Kotovsky his deputy. However, Kotovsky was shot dead by his subordinate in obscure circumstances before taking office.
