Mikhail Vassilievich Vodopianov (1899–1980). After the Civil War (1918–1921) Vodopianov flew the Moscow-Irkutsk and Moscow-Leningrad routes and was the first to open the air route to the Sakhalin Island. He graduated from an Air Force flying school in 1929, in March-April 1934 took part in the Cheluskin ice-breaker  crew rescue operations, which brought him the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.  In 1936-1937 he made Arctic flights as detachment leader.  During the first Soviet Sever-1 expedition to the North Pole, on May 21, 1937, Vodopianov was the first in the world to land his plane (the ANT-6, an Arctic version of the TB-3) on ice in the area of the North Pole.  His plane brought in a group of winterers , who organized the first drifting station Severnyi polyus (SP-1).  For that Vodopianov was awarded the Order of Lenin (there was as yet no status of two-times Hero of the Soviet Union).
