Francisco Infante was born in 1943 in a small village in the Saratov region. His father was a political émigré from Spain who had fled Franco’s regime. After his father’s untimely death, Infante and his family moved to Moscow. In 1961 he graduated from the Moscow Secondary Art School and went on to study at the Moscow Institute of Industrial Art (formerly the Stroganov Institute). He was a member of Dvizhenie (Movement Group) from its inception in 1962. The group explored kinetic art, theories of color music, and new visual technologies.
Infante split with Dvizhenie in 1968 and began to work independently. His interests lie in the boundaries between art and technology, and between art and nature. Since 1968 he has created biomechanical kinetic performances within nature and seeks to unite artificial objects with the natural environment. In the early 1970s Infante and his wife and colleague, Nonna Goriunova, began to document the performances and referred to the records of these actions as Artifacts.
Infante has participated in numerous exhibits in Asia, Europe, and the United States, and his work is currently held in major museums and private collections throughout the world. Infante lives in Moscow.
