Mikhail Grobman was born in Moscow in 1933. His talents are evident in the broad range of his artistic and literary activity, such as visual art, prose and poetry, journalism, and editorial and organizational work.

In the mid-1950s Grobman worked primarily as a writer. He also began collecting paintings of the Russian avant-garde and studying art history. In the late 1950s he formed a group of artists in Moscow including Yakovlev, Stesin, and Voroshilov. He interacted closely with the Lianozovo Group, took part in nonconformist art exhibitions, and worked actively in underground publishing. Grobman lives in Moscow.
