Tereshkova, Valentina Vladimirovna (b. 1937), the world’s first woman to fly into outer space (the flight took place on June 16–19, 1963. Valentina Tereshkova piloted the Vostok-6 spacecraft and flew 48 times around the Earth.), Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR and Hero of the Soviet Union (June 22, 1963), Soviet Women’s Committee President, Col.-Engineer (1970), recipient of several highest national awards.
