Anatolii Putilin was born in 1946 in Nikolaev. The graduate of the Leningrad Serov art school. The inspiration for his art can be traced to European painting of the seventeenth century, particularly to the tranquillity of the still lifes. In 1973 Putilin began his active participation in the underground community of Leningrad and joined the Society of Experimental Exhibitions. The poetry of the world of objects, predominantly art tools, brushes, palettes, and compasses, became a central theme of his art. He unites the European tradition of still lifes with Russian and European metaphysical thinking.

In 1979 Putilin emigrated to France. His metaphysical paintings hang in some of the major exhibition halls of Europe and Asia. The artist lives and works in Paris.
