Vase with the portrait of L.I. Brezhnev
1971

Russia, 1970s

Uncolored cut glass, diamond cutting, engraving

Height 54 cm (21.5")

The vase was, beyond doubt, custom made apparently for some anniversary that Soviet history was full of. One of the official posters of that period served as a source of Leonid Brezhnev’s portrait (in this case the style of poster design was highly suitable for being transferred into an engraving).

Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev (1906–1982), Soviet politician and statesman who came to symbolize the “stagnation period” of the Soviet regime. 1964–1966 – First Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee, 1966–1982 – General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee; Chairman of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet (1960–1964; 1977–1982), Marshal of the Soviet Union from 1976.
