Yevgeni Mitta was born into the family of the filmmaker Alexander Mitta in Moscow in 1963.  As a schoolboy Mitta Jr. made his debut in The Tale of How Czar Peter the Great Married off his Moor, a movie his father made in 1976.  In 1988 he graduated from the Surikov State Art Institute of Moscow and in 1989, together with Aidan Salakhova and Alexander Yakut, co-founded the First Gallery, the first private art gallery in post-Soviet Russia. In 1994 Mitta joined the Moscow Artists Union. In 2005 he founded the Paperworks Gallery within the ARTStrelka Culture Center.
