Andrei Medvedev was born into the family of an artist in Leningrad in 1959. He enrolled in the textiles department of the Mukhina Higher Industrial Art School of Leningrad (LVKhPU) in 1979 and, after defending his graduation thesis, began to work at an art fund in 1983. Between 1983 and 1986 Medvedev got associated with the “New Artists” group. Together with O. Kotelnikov, he made several animated cartoons at a documentary film studio and performed in Pop-Mechanics and Strannye igry (Strange Games) concerts. In 1987 he was the curator of the “Russian Rock in the Billboard” exhibition at the Musée-Galerie de la Seita, Paris. In 1993 he was professor of drawing at the New Academy of Fine Arts, in 1994–95 was among the authors of the “Passiones Luci” project at the George Soros Center of Contemporary Art. From 1995 he was director of studies, the New Academy of Fine Arts; member of the New Academy of Fine Arts research group, which aims to revive the forgotten methods of silverless photography, using gum arabic, bond and bromoil printing. Medvedev engaged in painting, graphic works, design, photography and teaching. From 1998 to 2000 he conducted drawing classes in the New Academy halls of the Mikhailovsky (St. Michael’s) Castle.
